Sjulnäs Tannery
Visit one of Sweden's few remaining tannery museums in Sjulnäs.
Discover a museum that tells the story of an important era in the 20th century, when tanneries provided both employment and the leather essential for agriculture and shoemaking, especially the traditional näbbskor (pointed-toe leather shoes).
As traditional bark tanning using spruce and pine bark gave way to chrome tanning, agriculture became increasingly mechanized, and rubber boots replaced leather footwear, many tanneries disappeared. In most cases, nothing remains today.
Sjulnäs Tannery is a rare exception, preserved in remarkably good condition. Come and experience its fascinating history.
The site also features a café and an exhibition of ceramics.
