Svartlidens natur reserve

About 35 kilometers west of Piteå, near Fagerheden, lies the Svartliden Nature Reserve – a green oasis for those who want to experience a forest with the feel of untouched wilderness.

Established in 1997, Svartliden covers around 65 hectares of rich, herb-filled old-growth forest. Spruce dominates the landscape, complemented by a diverse mix of aspen, birch, and willow. In places, impressively large trees rise above the forest floor, bearing witness to the area’s long natural history.

What makes Svartliden truly special is its natural character. The forest has largely been left to develop freely, resulting in an abundance of lying dead trees (logs), hollow trees, and large standing deadwood trunks. These habitats are invaluable for many species, and several red-listed (threatened) plants have been found here - particularly species that depend on old-growth forest environments. Keep an eye out for species such as rosenticka, rynkskinn, and ostticka—small but fascinating signs of a thriving forest ecosystem.

Thanks to its location close to the road, Svartliden is easy to access and well suited for both spontaneous visits and educational excursions. Information boards and a parking area are available on site, making it easy to explore this unique natural environment.

Svartliden is a place where tranquility prevails and nature sets the pace—perfect for anyone looking to connect with the richness and history of the forest.

If you would like more information, a map of the area, or have any other questions regarding the regulations for the area, you can visit the Norrbotten County Administrative Board’s website.
