From Öjebyn to Paris, from church murals and jazz bars to Ivar Kreuger’s private apartment: Rudolf Gowenius (1896–1960) navigated an era of profound change. His artistic practice spanned a wide range of techniques and contexts—including the development of a method for painting on velvet—and connected vastly different environments, people, and social strata.

In the spring of 1932, Maya and Rudolf Gowenius completed a large velvet painting for Ivar Kreuger’s music room in Paris. Kreuger was found dead just as the work was due to be delivered. The painting subsequently disappeared and is known today only through a photograph and a small preliminary study.

*The Cycles of Unease* (Orons konjunkturer) brings together paintings, sketches, prints, photographs, and other archival material from Gowenius’s life and work. The exhibition also features a new audiovisual installation by Andjeas Pestov Ejiksson—created in collaboration with composer Andreas Westerdahl—inspired by the lost painting commissioned by Kreuger.

The exhibition is curated by Andjeas Pestov Ejiksson, developed in dialogue with Vera Gowenius, and produced by Kin Museum of Contemporary Art.
