The Solander trail

Welcome to hike the Solander Trail along the coastal landscapes of Norrbotten in Swedish Lapland.

The 230 km trail stretches from Luleå Airport, just outside Luleå in the north, to Jävre, south of Piteå. As you hike, you will experience a fascinating landscape waiting to tell its story – a cultural history spanning more than 5,000 years and a natural history that began long before the last Ice Age.

The Solander Trail also offers encounters with local communities, traditional village life, grazing livestock, charming summer cafés, community halls, farm shops and accommodation along the route.

Hikers can also choose from a variety of nature and cultural activities and make detours to interesting attractions. Along the trail you will also find unique architect-designed shelters that provide both a place to rest and an experience in themselves.

Högberget, Jävre – Windshelter 45°
This shelter is designed to resemble a large rock that appears to have broken away from the cliff behind it and come to rest at a 45-degree angle. Inside, there is a seating area overlooking the sea, as well as a staircase leading to a sleeping loft and providing access to the rock face above. The shelter is located just above the existing fireplace at the summit of Högberget.

Fluggtjärnen, Rosfors Ecopark – The Forest Spirit
The sculptural design of this shelter is inspired by Nordic folklore and depicts the *Skogsrå*, the mythical guardian of the forest. As in the old legends, she is beautiful from the front but hollow from behind. Visitors who climb onto her back become part of the artwork, forming the Forest Spirit's head while enjoying panoramic views over Lake Fluggtjärnen. The shelter is reached via a signposted forest trail.

The hike takes you through the cultural landscapes of northern Sweden, historic villages and diverse forest environments with deep woodlands, tranquil forest lakes, rivers and streams, wetlands, and rocky hills offering magnificent views across the landscape.

The Solander Trail is more than just a journey from one point to another – it is an opportunity to learn, experience the silence of nature, and find space for reflection.
